A 97-year-old woman walking across the street in the 400 block of West Market early Saturday night was struck and killed by a car, becoming Montgomery County's 7th traffic fatality this year and its third in a little more than 24 hours. Mrs. Mary McClamroch of 402 W. Market was hit by an eastbound station wagon driven by Joseph N. Shaver, 64 of 1210 W. Main. Dr. Samuel Millis county coroner said she died instantly of multiple injuries, including cerebral concussions, internal abdominal injuries and fractures of both hips and legs. Police were called to the accident scene at 6:40 p.m. Officers reported Shaver, Crawfordsville buseinessman said he was driving east at a legal rate of speed with no approaching traffic and no vehicles behind him at the time. Shaver said that suddenly the elderly woman who was wearing dark clothing appeared directly at the right front of his car. The impact occurred as he braked. The pedestrian was crossing the street from north to south in front of her residence. The body was thrown upon the hood of the car and rolled off as the vehicle was brought to a stop. Police said the station wagon skidded approximately 67'. No arrest was made. Police said Shaver tested zero on a breathalyzer.

The county's fifth and sixth traffic fatalities occurred over the weekend from a 4-vehicle accident on US 231 about 8 miles south of the city. Joseph I. Dodds, 43, of Lafayette was killed instantly and a companion, Robert Curts, 49 of Rt. 3, Lafayette fatally injured at 6:10 p.m. Friday. Curts died in a Lafayette hospital at 12:45 a.m. Saturday. Crawfordsville has had two 1966 fatalities, the first being a car-truck crash at Wabash Avenue and Washington Street on March 16 in which Andrew Arvid Ferrier, 79 of Wingate was fatally hurt.
Mary Jane McClamroch was a native of this county born Oct 18, 1869 to John and Elizabeth Clayton Fordyce. She married Lemuel B. McClamroch a Civil War Veteran, on May 14, 1890. He died March 31, 1914. Mrs. McClamroch was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, its WSCS, the Alpha Bible Class and WRC. Surviving are a son, Paul McClamroch of Swayzee, Ind, and four grandchildren, Paul Jr, Tim, Ann and Kevin. A sister and two brothers preceded Mrs. McClamroch in death. Funeral services are announced for 11 a.m Tuesday at Bright Funeral Home with Rev. Keith S. Carlile officiating and interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Monday.
